Christian Substance Abuse Recovery Program
PROJECT: Name a new Christian faith-centered substance abuse treatment program for one of south Florida’s premier addiction and dual diagnosis treatment centers.
THREE STRANDS: “Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.” (Ecclesiastes 4: 7-12)
BRAND POSITIONING: Elements Behavioral Health came to us to develop a name for a Christian drug and alcohol rehabilitation program at The Recovery Place. The name had to somehow reference the Christian nature of the program or evoke a higher power in general. Since God is invoked in the Third Step of Alcoholics Anonymous – “Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him” – this got us thinking about the number three. The Christian Trinity defines God as three expressions: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, or “one God in three persons.” The three persons are distinct, yet are one “substance, essence or nature.” In this context, a “nature” is what one is, while a “person” is who one is. (Wikipedia: Trinity). The number three also comes up in the Three Legacies of Alcoholics Anonymous: Recovery, Unity, and Service.
This deep mix of associations and metaphors led us, finally, to the passage from the Bible quoted above, which gave us the perfect name. Three Strands evokes the Trinity, the Third Step, and the Three Legacies, all woven metaphorically together to create a strong cord that binds clients to long term recovery. But the name references other important threes as well, including the three prongs of healthy living – mind, body, and spirit – and the relationship among counselors, the group, and the individual, a reminder that by coming together with others, we strengthen ourselves. Three Strands honors and welcomes Christian diversity, with clients coming from all different denominations, including individuals who are seeking – but are yet to find – a strong spiritual connection. This unique Christian drug rehab program is open to anyone who wants to begin, continue, or rekindle their faith as a guide for successful addiction recovery.
