Giovanni Bellini’s painting “St. Francis in the Desert” (c. 1480) is one of the greatest paintings of all time, and possibly my favorite painting. If you have never seen it in person, you must go to the Frick Collection in New York to see it. It just returned to public display last year after a stint of conservation and study, which you can read about in this New York Times article, Alone in the Wilderness and the Spotlight. Our fair city of San Francisco, of course, was named after St. Francis.
